4 simple steps to add Christmas décor to your home

Updated: Oct 30, 2019

My favorite part about the Christmas season (besides the Hallmark movies) is the decor. It is a time where we can really transform our homes in a completely different way. Business Insider even wrote an article about how putting up your Christmas decor early will make you HAPPIER. I'm in.

We should always decorate our houses to inspire us or to make us feel our best, but this is even truer during the holidays. Christmas decorations are a way to elevate this season and really put you in the spirit! Here are some steps to think about as you begin to get your home ready for the Christmas season.

1. Take your home down to the basics

First, we need to prepare our home by stripping it down to the basics. Put away any fall decor, pillow covers, wall hangings, etc that you know you will not need for the winter season. Clearing these things out gives you a nice blank slate to plan and decorate. Plus, it is easier to put everything away then get out your decorations rather than making a huge mess by doing both at the same time.

2. Decide your intention

Why are you decorating for this season? To make your home warmer, to get in the giving spirit or maybe to remember why you are celebrating. Whatever your reason, keep this in mind as you buy decor and begin to decorate your home. What you put in a space will change how it makes you feel. For my own Christmas decor, I like to keep within a traditional pallete and decor to remind myself of the purpose of the season.

3. Keep it simple

One of the biggest design mistakes you can make is going overboard with stuff. Often, less is more. Every inch of our homes do not need to be covered in red, green and gold to convey Christmas. Make subtle changes and add small items to each room in a subtle way. A little table tree here or snowglobe there to transform the space rather than going too over the top. If you do like this look though, do you! But do it purposefully.

4. Use what you have

You do not need to buy, buy, buy to decorate your house. Get creative and use what you already have to decorate. Take the time to untangle those lights or try a DIY. It is not about HOW much stuff you have but how you use what you already own.

Happy decorating and a Merry Christmas to you!

xx.
